One of the most enjoyable aspects of a garden railroad is the prospect of operating real locomotives, just on a very small scale compared to the prototype equipment. Many garden trains run on electricity, whether it is provided via a battery on the train or through the tracks. These trains are convenient and simple to run, and look great too!
Another type of garden train locomotives are “live steam”, which means that the engine generates steam and uses that steam to move the engine. These trains can even burn real coal! With live steam trains, you are operating your own, real, working locomotive.
Here is a recent test of a live steam model train, called “Mabel”, assembled from a kit made by Accucraft trains.
